From Poland to Curaçao to Amsterdam and back.

F. Chopin by Jolanta Izabela Pawlak
Music and art have no boundaries. A fine example is this little riddle... What unites a traditional classical music from Poland with a little Island in the Caribbean and an artist residing in Amsterdam?

Chopin! The Polish composer who wrote many Mazurkas centuries ago. Traditional Polish music, loved by travelers and adventurers who embarked on the Island of Curaçao and introduced his music. On this little island in the Caribbean, the Mazurkas and Chopin himself were embraced and welcomed in many hearts. His music inspired generations of pianists and artists. Such as the well known Palm pianist family and many jazz musicians.

Chopin was also welcomed in the heart of one particular artist who lived on Curaçao for 10 years. This Polish artist who listened to the traditional compositions since her childhood in Poland and was amazed to find this music inspired by Chopin on the Island.

"I would never have expected that on Curaçao - Jolanta Izabela Pawlak says - Chopin would be presented to me, in the Antillean mazurkas and waltzes. It is beautiful that music and art truly have no boundaries. That Chopin fits so well in the mentality of the Carribean and we still dance to his music today.

To honor Chopin, his legacy and to show my love for the Island of Curaçao, I created a sculpture. It symbolizes the connection between the composer, the traditional Curaçao dividivi trees and it reflects my love for the Island. One day I hope to bring this sculpture I created back to Curaçao where it belongs. It would be wonderful to see this gift to the Island standing at the Governor plaza. Maybe next year, on Chopin's next birthday."
